NEVADA, Mo. - One of the area's newest sheriffs is looking at new ways to keep people safe.

And so far, it's been a success.

"Just a few weeks ago, we had a theft investigation where the individuals were living out in the county."

And that presents a problem for Nevada Police Captain Joshua Westerhold. His jurisdiction stops at city limits.

"We were able to identify those, consult with the sheriff's office. They were able to help recover that property," said Cpt. Westerhold.

Sheriff Mike Buehler says the relationship between the Vernon County Sheriff's Office and Nevada PD is based on:

"At the end of the day, we all want the same thing," said Sheriff Buehler.

Keeping people safe.

One way the two agencies are doing that is by sharing more information.

Sheriff Buehler says Nevada PD and his office both use the same software, and now their systems are linked.

"They're able to view our property list or our crime list. We're able to review theirs so that we can work together."

Captain Westerhold says many times the individual agencies will have a piece of the puzzle.

"Both departments are dealing with the exact same people, you know. City limits don't stop people from committing crimes," said Cpt. Westerhold.

And putting those pieces together by working together moves them closer to their goal.

"The ultimate goal, you know, is to make these communities inside Vernon County safer."

Buehler's office is also working jointly with several other agencies, including probation and parole and emergency management.
